Carolyn Milbank, artist

Carolyn’s page is now up online. Very sadly. Carolyn is moving to the Cormandel and leaving our studios, but will always be a part of us.

Carolyn is presenting work at the “Off the Wall’ Gallery at the Old Library in Whangarei from 1-10 December 2012, titled “Wrapped Up” with Meiling Lee, Anneke Muijlwijk and Suzan Lee. Painting, cast glass, sculpture.

And she will also be part of next year’s along with Trevor Bayly from our studio.

Manawa at The Basement Theatre – go see it!

I went to see this play last night and was riveted by every performer’s performance. Fantastic – a must see it if you can. – Jo

Manawa is a new play by Jamie McCaskill that explores the NZ justice system through 3 dynamic and compelling characters. A humorous and poignant play, Manawa follows the journey of New Zealand’s youngest murderer, Jimmy King, who shares a cell with public enemy number one, Mau Vaiaga, who was arrested for killing a native bird. Manawa aims to bring the heart out of these characters. And even though you might not agree with the characters decisions, you may understand them. Accompanied by an ambient and melodic live soundscape composed by Thames musician, Simon Donald, Manawa will take you on a journey that will resonate with you for days to come.

Painting Summer Schools with Matthew Browne

Two workshops: 9.30am – 3.30pm daily
Workshop # 1: Painting 7th- 10th January 2013: $355 (4 days)
Workshop # 2: Painting from the Figure 11th- 13th January 2013: $320 (3 days)
Maximum enrolment for each course is 12 students.

Kick-start the New Year and join us for either of these exciting and informative classes developed to get your drawing and painting up and running.
Both classes are suitable for students with some experience who feel that they would benefit from further guidance in a stimulating and supportive environment.

Workshop # 1 Painting: Beginning with observation you will be encouraged to explore both the drawing and painting processes, experimenting with scale, media and technique to awaken a conceptual awareness and a personal vision.
Learning is conducted through strong direction and structure with plenty of flexibility for open interpretations and with a particular emphasis on accommodating individuality and creative growth.

Workshop # 2 Painting from the Figure: Working directly from the unclothed figure course participants will initially produce a series of observational studies looking at the formal issues of form, structure and space.
Students will then be encouraged to develop both drawings and paintings that explore an individual response to the figure with a particular emphasis on the translation of these formal issues into exciting and expressive explorations of line, tone and colour.

Jane Thorne, artist

And Jane Thorne‘s page is now up. Jane is into insects and paints them in exquisite detail. Another reference to Darwinism! Once you know that Jane has studied museology, collectors and evolutionists, all falls into place.

We have three new artists in our studio due to artists shifting to the US, the Coromandel and to Nelson. A changing of the guard.
